Meneer Zee

Castelraimondo, Paradise for Language Students

If you were wondering what Castelraimondo is all about, I can be short. It's a small village, surrounded by hills, in the region of Le Marche,Italy. Pretty quiet and with the majority of the population (5000 in total!) being well passed the retirement age, nevertheless not completely uncharming.

The Castle to which Castelraimondo thanks its name might be old, but lacks all the splendour of middle-age castles as we like to imagine them. I guess they had not much alternatives to name their village hundreds of years back. Castelraimondo counts a supermarket or 2, 2 gelateria's in the main street, one bar (Alchemy) and the obligatory pizzeria, which all seem to live from the international students who come here to learn Italian (Scuola Dante Alighieri)

That last purpose, learning Italian, Castelraimondo serves pretty well. Not a single soul speaks English here, so if you don't give it your best shot you're destined to starve. The absence of entertainment and nightlife also makes studying languages by far the most useful activity, without any sign of the pleasantly disturbing atmosphere one finds in the bigger cities such as Rome.

Anyhow, Castelraimondo is still Italy, making it a synonym for good food and good wine. Escaping the daily ratrace and enjoying the small things of life are therefore the main pleasures one can get in Castelraimondo. But less is more so you don't hear me complaining.

Rome In a Nutshell

Rome is great! Though I didn't have time enough to visit every single place, the purpose of my trip to Italy wasn't sightseeing in the first place, Rome definitely impressed me. The city breaths history on every corner of the street and is absolutely stuffed with places I remember from the time I was studying Latin.

Unfortunately the city at the same time attracts huge crowds of tourists, who sometimes disturb quiet contemplation about times long gone. Anyway, look for yourself and start planning your next city trip if you haven't experienced the greatness of the Roman Empire...

The Reverse Culture Shock

Today one year ago was the day I left for an unknown adventure in India. Today I'm home for about a week, slowly adapting to the Belgian lifestyle again. Though it might sound strange, there is something like the 'reverse culture' shock, meaning that even one's home country asks for some minor, sometimes major, adaptations again.

Upon my arrival a national strike for more buying power had been declared and put on hold the public life (and transport) in Belgium, for a day. It will not surprise you that after a year in India, the discussion about buying power (decreasing due to inflation) seems banal and superflous. Not only my own buying power was extremely low, having seen the masses without buying power over there every single day, pretty much makes me ashamed of the noisy union bosses yelling for more money and less work. It makes you quit and gets one thinking about how spoiled we are here in our little Belgium...but what to do? Not joining the ratrace would be a good start, right?

On the other hand it's good to be back. It's quite, clean and structured here. Cold as well. It's hard to make conversation sometimes, I'm not really aware of the changes, maybe even lost a bit of feeling with people. But I'm more me, I enjoy and staying for a while...

Traveling India: Mysore - Cochin

To complete the list of blog posts related to my travels through the Indian Subcontinent; I hereby quickly add some pictures of the last stages. We slept 2 consecutive nights on a bus, going from Hampi to Mysore and Mysore to Kochin, but the ultimate reward were the houseboat which we thoroughly enjoyed. Already some days ago
